Beards are decidedly in – in fashion, yes, but they’re also in the sun, in the gym, in work and ultimately in need of care. If you’re lucky enough to have a chin equipped with luscious, thick hair, you’ll also need to put the effort in to keep it clean. Since beard hair is thicker than regular hair, regular shampoo simply won’t do.
Fortunately, there are plenty of beard shampoos and beard washes for the job. These lotions will cleanse, freshen and protect your facial hair to ensure it doesn’t border on a facial error. And if you really want to give the thing a proper touch-up? Be sure to check out our guide to the best beard oils, razors and beard trimmers.
What’s the difference between beard shampoo and hair shampoo?
For the same reason that any good barber will tell you not to shampoo your hair every time you shower, because these head hair shampoos can be incredibly drying. A dry scalp is a problem, but a dry chin much more so.
The chemicals in hair shampoos will strip your beard of its natural oils and could leave both the hair and the skin beneath dry and brittle. Beard washes, however, are designed to work with, rather than against the natural oils produced by your skin and hair with plenty of hydrating and anti-inflammatory ingredients.
Will beard shampoo get rid of beard dandruff?
It'll certainly go some way towards combatting the problem. Ingredients in beard shampoo are blended without harsh detergents and by massaging deep into your beard, you'll extend the benefits to the skin underneath. But dandruff is inherently a dermatologic problem, and to get to the root of it, a good moisturiser is what you're looking for.
How often should I wash my beard?
It will vary from beard to beard. For an oilier beard, consider shampooing up to five times a week, for drier beards, much less. Work also comes into it – if you have a more physical, outdoorsy job, your beard will naturally build up dirt and require more regular maintenance. Those who sit at a desk all day, meanwhile, will find once or twice a week does the job.
